Carbonless (NCR) paper is coated with microencapsulated chemicals on both sides—CB (back coating) and CF (front coating). When pressure from handwriting or a printer breaks the CB microcapsules, the released dye reacts with the CF layer to form a crisp image directly on the front side, eliminating the need for messy carbon sheets.
