Carbonless paper is coated with two types of chemicals: CF, or front coating, and CB, or back coating. These chemicals are contained in tiny capsules that release their contents when pressure from a pen or printer causes the capsules to rupture.
When CF and CB chemicals interact, the CF chemicals darken, creating an image on the CF side of the paper. A clear way to distinguish CF from CB chemicals is that the image appears only on the front side, with no image on the back. This type of paper, which produces images without copying, is known as 'carbonless paper.'
